Captain a Shalloway

Here’s your chance! Take control of a “shalloway” — a type of fishing vessel used by the French and then the English, and an important part of the commercial fishery here for half a millennium. You’ll learn to “scull” on the tranquill Ship Cove Pond — a technique that involves moving a single oar mounted at the stern of the boat from side to side to propel the shalloway forward. Under the guidance of a master boat builder, mariner, Port de Grave resident, and genuine colourful character by the name of Vern, experiences don’t get any more authentic than this!
