<image:caption>Nature provides the playground, with rugged coastline, cliffs and coves. Take time to reflect as you stroll one of our beaches and our hills and delve into the rich stories behind placenames like Jailhouse Rock, Lover’s Leap, and No Denial Rock. Walk amid bobbing boats in the harbour – as colourfully named as they are decaled. Want to hear the tale behind Rebecca’s Dream, Freedom Run, or Joyful Sound? You’ll get them from Port de Grave’s most colourful component of all – our people, with their linguistic echoes and accents of their ancient English ancestors. Come visit us. Bring a friend or two. You still won’t tip our population over 1000.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At Port de Grave, we are always cooking new and exciting events. Anybody who knows anything about the people that live on the Port de Grave Peninsula is that they’re a busy bunch. Maybe it’s all the fresh air and unobstructed views. Or perhaps it’s the lack of bureaucracy and red tape. Whatever the reason, there’s always a lot happening on the Peninsula and we’d love to see you there!</image:caption>

Or perhaps it’s the lack of bureaucracy and red tape. Whatever the reason, there’s always a lot happening on the Peninsula and we’d love to see you there!</image:caption>

<image:caption>First came the Portuguese and the pirates. Then the English and the Irish, who made the Port de Grave Peninsula one of the province’s oldest permanent settlements of migrant European fishers. In fact, it’s a small matter of half a millennium ago that Portuguese explorer Gaspar Corte-Real and his British counterpart John Guy happened across these rugged shores. They clearly liked what they saw, including waters rich for fishing that still support a modern and innovative fishery to this day, with one of the most active fishing ports in the province.</image:caption>

<image:title>History</image:title>
<image:caption>The first European settlers could surely tell, their rich stories etched into the fabric of modern-day Port de Grave. It was some five hundred years ago that the first of them found their way to these shores, led by the French who used the beaches to dry their catch as they braved the elements to fish bountiful nearby waters. Then followed the English who, by the end of the 16th century, had turned the stretch from Carbonear to Brigus (and between them, Port de Grave) into a major part of the English fishery. From here, the story of the Port de Grave Peninsula is one of growth and change, faith and resilience, sharing and renewal. In a place that could show much majesty but little mercy, the brave souls who banded together to make this place home needed every ounce of those qualities to tame land and sea — or at least learn to live in harmony with it, and one another. Neighbour helping neighbour — a day, a year, a decade, a century at a time, the people of the Peninsula persevered and prospered.</image:caption>

<image:title>History</image:title>
<image:caption>By the early 1920s, the Labrador fishery had all but ended for Port de Grave captains and the 1930s saw salmon fishing in the early summer complimenting cod fishing in the late summer as a means for the people to make their livings. As the century wore on, the decline in fishing and sealing was mirrored by a decline in population, which fell as low as 123 by 1968. Ever resilient and resourceful, residents turned to turbot and snow crab, continuing to support one another and maintain their connection to this special place. Today, the people of the Peninsula remain fiercely independent and self-sufficient, with a deep commitment to community. The place continues to produce provincial and national leaders in business, the arts, and government. The Port de Grave Peninsula continues to reach, as it has for millennia, out into the swirling seas of the cold north Atlantic. A place that has stood strong through hundreds of years of trial, turmoil, success and survival for the people who have become as much a part of it as its most ancient rocks. The Peninsula offers its timeless beauty and in return demands the very best characteristics of its residents. As the raging waves have long shaped its coastline, so too has it forged in its people the qualities of innovation and self-reliance. The people of the Port de Grave Peninsula are made of all this. They take great pride in their past and look forward to the future. In a place where time moves differently and rich history echoes off every ancient rock, visitors are always welcome to come and make memories of their own.</image:caption>

<image:title>History</image:title>
<image:caption>The 17th century saw farming and fishing bring increasing prosperity for the residents of Port de Grave — prosperity that didn’t escape the attention of the French. They would have to recover and rebuild following attacks led by Le Moyne D’Iberville in both 1697 and 1706. Through the 18th and 19th centuries came the Irish, bringing with them their experience and expertise in farming to cultivate the rocky peninsula, as well as Roman Catholicism. Offshore, the lure of abundant Labrador seas saw Port de Grave fishers venture further from home, while sealing became another important contributor to the Peninsula’s economy, along with the industry of building the ships that would carry brave fishers out onto cold and perilous waters. By the end of the 19th century, construction of the Green Point lighthouse served as a shining beacon of prosperity and the fervent activity off the Peninsula’s coast. Many local merchants, such as the Dawe’s, Jacob’s and Martin’s, Furneau’s, Johnson’s, Butler’s and Andrews were established on the Peninsula and their names well-known in the region.</image:caption>

<image:title>Churches & Graveyards - St. Luke’s Church</image:title>
<image:caption>The first Church of England church in Port de Grave, work began on St. Luke’s in 1823, was completed in 1826, and the church was consecrated by Bishop John Inglis in July of 1827. It was built on land purchased from the Dawe family and was located on the hill behind the present church hall. 1827 was also the year the first clergyman, Rev. Charles Blackman, arrived at Port de Grave. This church was replaced by a new, larger church in 1873. A bell was installed around 1885 in a belfry close to the road. In 1916 it was decided to build the present church, which is 100 feet long and was originally designed to seat 1,000 people. A very tall tower (shortened in 1949) was built on the church to house the bell. It took 10 years to build this church due mainly to years of poor fishery and the large number of young men (41) serving in the Armed Forces during World War I. The church was finished and consecrated by Bishop White in 1926. It continues to serve the people of Port de Grave today.</image:caption>

<image:title>Churches & Graveyards - St. Mark’s Anglican Church</image:title>
<image:caption>St. Mark’s was built in 1816 by a community of fishermen and their families. Referred to as the “Free Labour Church” at the time, it was consecrated on May 14, 1930 by Bishop White. St. Mark’s Church is one of the most prominent buildings on the Peninsula. The approaches along Bareneed Road and Otterbury Road offer striking views of the church and surrounding grounds set against a transfixing vista. St. Mark’s Church was closed shortly after celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2016.</image:caption>

<image:title>Churches & Graveyards - The United Church of Canada</image:title>
<image:caption>The United Church of Canada had two churches on the Port de Grave Peninsula, one at the fork in the road in Bareneed and the other by the harbour. There was also a one-room school which was open until the early sixties, when the remaining eight students went to St. Luke’s and the Pentecostal School in Ship Cove. Due to declining attendance numbers, both churches eventually closed and the schoolhouse was torn down. At the site of the United Church in the harbour you will find the old bell and monument. The church bell in Bareneed can be found in the cemetery. Even though the churches are closed, the cemeteries are still being used and taken care of by former members of the congregation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Churches & Graveyards - Pentecostal Tabernacle</image:title>
<image:caption>The first Pentecostal activity on the Peninsula took place in the form of open-air meetings on a local fisherman’s wharf in 1924, with visiting Pentecostals presiding to share with others information about their faith. The first official service was held at the Orange Lodge in March 1925, continuing there and in private homes until a new church was opened on April 2, 1926. The first Pentecostal school in the community opened in 1955, and on May 26, 1963, a new church was opened by Ship Cove Pond. It became a lively site in the early 1970s, when pastors Robert and Phyllis Simmons placed a greater emphasis on music. Later that decade, a television program born through the ministry of pastors William and Taffie Burton began to air on NTV. “Joyful Sound” was broadcast across the province for a few years and considered a great success for the church. Two years after a new Pentecostal school opened on the Harbour Hills in 1985, a new church was built adjacent to the school. It officially opened on April 19, 1987. When the Pentecostal school closed in the late 1990s, the Church purchased the building to use as a ministry centre.</image:caption>

<image:caption>So raved American artist George Noseworthy who in 1966 settled permanently with his wife in Hibbs Cove, living in the Porter House. The world of life and colour he had discovered not only inspired such enthusiastic journal entries, but also a wide-ranging collection of artworks depicting rural landscapes and lifestyles dating back to the 1700s, along with a local art movement in his newfound wonderland.</image:caption>

Indeed, it was Noseworthy who would become the founder of the Fisherman’s Museum and his presence is felt strongly there to this day in the shape of an urn containing his ashes is held in the museum, and his artwork and some from his students are displayed on the walls.</image:caption>

The building houses an impressive collection of artifacts from the traditional fishery, along with a number of model boats. Just a short time spent within its historic walls will bring to life centuries-old tales of taming the seas and cultivating the land of the Peninsula. The building is a single-room wood-frame school house featuring a bank of “schoolhouse” windows that allowed natural light to brighten the teaching area when class was in session. With a small, raised stage at one end, the school is set up in its historical configuration, with several historical displays retelling stories of school days gone by. <image:title>Harbours & Coves - Did you know that Hibbs Cove used to be known as “Hibbs Hole”?</image:title>
<image:caption>The reason? Its unique shape and restrictive size — so small that a boat could only be rowed in or out. Vessels with sails couldn’t enter, turn around and leave, as they did in the larger coves. What is today known as Hibbs Cove is home to a cluster of three prominent buildings — the Fishermen’s Museum, Hibbs Hole Cove Schoolhouse, and Porter House. Along with the adjacent wharves and breakwater, these historic places offer a peek into truly authentic traditional communities and the fishing practices that have for so long sustained them. Indeed, the coves adjacent to Port de Grave Harbour each are unique and beautiful places, each with its own story to tell.</image:caption>

<image:title>Green Point Lighthouse - The story of this iconic lighthouse began with tragedy when the community of Bay Roberts suffered the devastating loss of 45 lives as the Huntsman vessel sank in a storm.</image:title>
<image:caption>It was at the community’s behest that the classic cylindrical tower was constructed. The Green Point Lighthouse came about as part of an expansion of navigational aids in the colony of Newfoundland in the 19th century that had begun in 1811 with the marking of major shipping routes and, later, minor lights to make local shipping and fishing safer for outport communities.</image:caption>

<image:title>Green Point Lighthouse</image:title>
<image:caption>While it has become as much a draw for tourists as a warning for mariners, the lighthouse continues to this day to guide countless tankers, ferries, fishing and cargo vessels, and recreational boaters. Now the property of the Port de Grave Heritage Society, the Coast Guard continues an operating presence and in 2017, Parks Canada recognized the Green Point Lighthouse as a Heritage Site, providing a plaque to mark the designation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Green Point Lighthouse</image:title>
<image:caption>Fashioned of cast iron, the lighthouse’s straight, cylindrical tower with a red and white colour scheme is typical of many lighthouses built in Newfoundland in the 1870s. Built of a utilitarian and practical design to stand the rigours of the Newfoundland coast, the Green Point Lighthouse has become elevated from functional necessity to rightly be considered an eye-catching feature, as important as any of the natural elements that surround it. The now-familiar and beloved landmark means a lot to the local communities in the Port de Grave region, who consider it a beacon that has guided generations of their ancestors on the treacherous waters. Locals and visitors alike are drawn to the site to enjoy picnics, take in the ocean views, and breath in the fresh sea air. Nearby residents have staffed the lighthouse for generations, making it a true cultural symbol of the community (though today its light is automated and powered by solar energy).</image:caption>

<image:title>Green Point Lighthouse</image:title>
<image:caption>Standing on the rugged point of rural Port de Grave Peninsula, fierce waves crashing at its base and wild winds whipping about its gallery, the lighthouse has long served as a secondary coastal light, guiding vessels entering the southern entrance to Bay Roberts Harbour. Its presence has helped to not only protect lives offshore, but also livelihoods onshore, playing an important role in the socio-economic development of the communities along the Peninsula. The lighthouse served both the inshore and Labrador fisheries, contributing to the growth of the local economy and surrounding communities.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Join us on opening night to see the lights come on, along with visits from some very special guests – traditional Newfoundland Mummers and Santa himself! Grab a hot chocolate, bring your singing voice, and bask in the festive spirit. Even if you can’t make it to opening night, a walk amid 50 to 60 brightly lit, bobbing boats is a seasonal treat not to be missed. Drawing more and more visitors every year, the magical image of a harbour aglow has become internationally recognized and prominently featured in provincial tourism materials.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Once you’ve experienced Christmas in the Harbour, your next stop has to be the St. Mark’s Heritage Church and the Cannon Richard’s Tea Room, the site of the largest crab pot Christmas tree in Atlantic Canada. Using over 450 pots — a boat load of pots typically brought to the crab grounds at the beginning of the crab season — we’ve arranged and decorated the pots in spectacular fashion, with creatively applied fishing gear and thousands of Christmas lights to create a Christmas tree like no other. <image:caption>Grab a hot chocolate, bring your singing voice, and bask in the festive spirit.

<image:title>Christmas in the Harbour - The Story of the Boat Lighting</image:title>
<image:caption>In the fall of 1999, Port de Grave was selected to become the last port of call for the Viking Ship, the Islendingur, in the summer of 2000. A committee was formed which consisted of 35 people, it had two Co-Chairs Wayne Harbin and Joyce Morgan. Port de Grave would host a celebration like it never had seen before. That fall the Government of Newfoundland sponsored the Festival of Lights, whereby any community that was willing to participate by lighting up their community for Christmas would receive a grant in the amount of $500.00, we decided “what a way to celebrate Christmas by lighting up the Harbour”, and so our story begins… Read more</image:caption>

<image:title>The Story of the Boat Lighting</image:title>
<image:caption>The years before that one lone fisherman Eric Lear would light up his fishing boat, so we thought what a wonderful idea to go to all the Boat Owners and ask them to participate in lighting up their boats. But we couldn’t do this alone, so we took our idea to the Port de Grave Harbour Authority and asked for their assistance, we than became partners in this annual tradition. The Islendingur Committee ceased existence once the celebrations were over, and our committee of 35 dwindled to about 6 people who took over the Harbour Days celebrations for the next 5 years, whereby a week of celebrations were held in the month of August. Joyce Morgan remains at the helm and is Chair of the Port de Grave Boat Lighting Committee to this very day! Our very first boat lighting Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, we had 36 boats participate, it was such a magical night, I still remember as if it were yesterday. A perfect, flat calm night with the moon and stars shining brightly, there were many people in attendance, there were speeches and singing from St. Luke’s and the Pentecostal Children’s Choirs. Hot chocolate was served and there was a visit from Santa Claus. Silent Night was being sung by everyone and the boats were being lit one by one, such an incredible feeling. Since that very first boat lighting, more fishermen and pleasure craft boat owners have been participating, with more lights and more decorations, some years we have had as many as 70 plus boats lit up.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Over the past number of years NTV news has played an important role in our Opening Ceremonies. They come and broadcast live from the harbour, bringing Eddie Sheerr, Sharon Snow and on our 20th anniversary, Toni Marie broadcast the news from the stage area. This has been a major draw especially Eddie! People just love to meet him and flock to where he is. Sharon Snow has taken part and have been known to sing along with our Singers Ron and Natalie Curtis. We are so grateful to also have had Danielle Butt participate. Station manager Lindsey Andrews have confirmed that this year will be something special! We are so very thankful for their participation in sharing this to their audience across the province and across Canada!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Getting close to the harbour you come to the Candy Cane house, this house owned by Ellsworth and Dot Petten, has hundreds of candy canes on their property and has become one of the major attractions! In 2022, Ellsworth decorated his lawn with 520 candy canes. In 2020 we were not permitted to have an Opening Ceremony because of COVID, but that didn’t stop us, we did a virtual one. We had guests’ speakers send us their greeting via video, our musicians shared the sounds of Christmas. For the first time ever, we had a greeting from a Premier, Premier Andrew Furey, along with MP Ken McDonald, and our MHA Pam Parsons. It was shared on Facebook and YouTube; it was watched by thousands around the world. After that people wanted to know if we would be livestreaming the ceremony, unfortunately the internet signal in the harbour is not great. We now video the ceremony and post to YouTube, the next day. The Port de Grave Boat Lighting is known around the world! It has been showcased on CBC, CBC National with Peter Mansbridge, & Global National. In 2014 Land and Sea did the show "A Gift of Light", this has been aired almost every year since. The Navigator, the Downhome Magazine, in-flight magazine on the American Airlines United Airlines, the Times in England, plus numerous other news papers and websites. Photos have been taken by professionals, amateurs, one photo was in the first 18th out of 19,000 photos in a Global photo contest.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Story of the Boat Lighting</image:title>
<image:caption>Due to some boats being sold, we average anywhere between 50 to 60 boats taking part. What an awesome sight when you hit the top of the Harbour Hills coming into Port de Grave! Every year thousands of people come to Port de Grave to view the lights. During 2020 the year of COVID, people were, guess you can say trapped in their homes, no outings no family gatherings no parties. So, what do you do you take your bubble and go to Port de Grave to see the lights? They came by the thousands, a normal trip to Port de Grave from the lights in Bay Roberts, takes 10 minutes. In 2020 most nights it took almost two hours to get the same distance! During their drive to the harbour, they enjoyed the view on the way, the beautiful, decorated homes, the largest Crabpot Christmas tree in Atlantic Canada, a lobster pot tree, and another smaller version Crabpot Christmas tree.</image:caption>
